Recent Advances in the Development and Application of Green Extraction Techniques

Nowadays, more than ever, new strategies need to be developed and implemented to reduce the environmental burden of extraction techniques that are intensively used across all sectors of the (bio)economy and analytical laboratories. The ongoing works towards alternative greenest extraction methodologies, and consequently those contributing to an imperative World Sustainable Development, need to be disseminated to expand the acquired knowledge to other fields and to provide the needed impetus for overcoming the existent limitations.

Thus, the goal of the webinar “Recent Advances in the Development and Application of Green Extraction Techniques” is to share experiences and promote discussion on novel (experimental or theoretical) challenges, advances, and outlooks concerning the development and/or applications of Green Extraction Methodologies. You are all invited to participate!

This Webinar relates to the Special Issue Recent Advances in the Development and Application of Green Extraction Techniques

Dr. Anastasia Detsi

Anastasia Detsi is an Associate Professor of Applied Organic Chemistry in the School of Chemical Engineering, NTUA and the Director of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry. The research group of Prof. A. Detsi consists currently of 14 members [10 graduate students (PhD candidates), 2 postdoctoral researchers and 2 MSc students] of various scientific backgrounds (Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medical Doctor). The group’s work is dedicated to innovative research based on Organic Chemistry and its applications on the following fields: (1) Green Chemistry and Technology: Synthesis and biodegradability assessment of new Ionic Liquids (ILs) and Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), and their applications in organic synthesis, extraction of bioactive natural products from plants in combination with high-energy techniques (microwave, ultrasound) and preparation of biocompatible and biodegradable edible films with tailored mechanical properties. (2) Nanotechnology: encapsulation of bioactive molecules and plant extracts in nanoparticles using a variety of matrices such as biodegradable polymers (PLA, PLGA, PBS), β-cyclodextrin, solid lipid nanoparticles, chitosan, for applications in drug delivery systems, cosmetics and food additives. (3) Medicinal Chemistry: Design, synthesis, characterization and biological activity evaluation of novel bioactive compounds and natural product analogues.
Prof. A. Detsi has published 75 research articles (h index=23, 1818 citations, source: Scopus, accessed October 2020) and more than 150 conference presentations. She has been the principal investigator or senior scientist in Greek and European research programs and has actively participated in 4 COST Actions as Management Committee member. Prof. Detsi is currently a member of the Management Committee of the European COST Action CA18224-“Green Chemical Engineering Network towards upscaling sustainable processes” (GREENERING).

Dr. Dimitris P. Makris

Dimitris P. Makris was born in Xanthi (Greece), in 1974, and holds a BSc from the School of Food Technology & Nutrition of the T.E.I. of Athens (Greece, 1995), an MSc from the I.U.V.V.
